Lost Wax Casting is an ancient form of jewelry making, that Jeremy has learned through the years from his father and grandfather.
First a design is hand carved out of wax. Then it is mounted in a flask and surrounded by plaster. When the plaster hardens, then the flask is put into a burnout oven and heated until the wax melts out.
This leaves a hole in the plaster that is exactly the size and shape of the wax design. The flask is then mounted in a casting machine. Gold, Platinum, or Sterling Silver is melted in a crucible mounted against the flask. When it is melted to the right temperature, it is flung into the flask by centrifugal force and it hardens into exactly the size and shape of the original design.
The metal is then removed, filed, polished, and prepared for completion. At this point, diamonds and other gemstones can be set within the design.
Our customers at Gem Designs thoroughly enjoy the Lost Wax Casting process, since they are involved in every step of the way.
